Steven Soderbergh absolutely thought he was going to make a Star Wars film. As has been previously and widely reported, Soderbergh and star Adam Driver labored for a number of years on crafting a Ben Solo movie that everybody at Lucasfilm liked. Nonetheless, Disney didn’t adore it and killed it. In a brand new interview, the Oscar-winning director of Site visitors, Ocean’s Eleven, Solaris, and Magic Mike mentioned that disappointment and revealed he had earmarked two years of his life to go to a galaxy far, distant.
“I assumed the following two years of my life had been going to be spent making a Star Wars film,” Soderbergh instructed Brooklyn Magazine. “And so, within the speedy aftermath of that, my response was, ‘You higher begin getting some shit generated so you may return to work.’” In consequence, he wrote 4 new scripts.
The interview, which you can read in full here, apparently occurred quickly after Kathleen Kennedy announced she was stepping down as president of Lucasfilm. At the moment, Kennedy expressed disappointment at Disney’s resolution to not make Soderbergh’s film, and the director reacted to Kennedy’s quotes.
“It was no shock that she was annoyed,” he stated. “We had been all annoyed. You understand, that was two and a half years of free work for me and Adam [Driver] and Rebecca Blunt. When Adam and I mentioned him speaking about it publicly, I stated, ‘Look, don’t editorialize or speculate in regards to the why. Simply say what occurred, as a result of all we all know is what occurred.’ The acknowledged purpose was ‘We don’t suppose Ben Solo might be alive.’ And that was all we had been instructed. And so there’s nothing to do about it, you understand, besides transfer on.”
“And as I posted, I’d form of made the film in my head, and simply felt dangerous that no one else was going to get to see it,” Soderbergh continued. “I assumed the dialog was strictly going to be a sensible one—the place they go, what is that this going to value? And I had a very good reply for that. But it surely by no means even bought to that time. It’s insane. We’re all very disillusioned.”
We love that whereas Soderbergh had stuff like budgetary issues in thoughts, Disney’s precise purpose for turning it down had nothing to do with that. “We don’t suppose Ben Solo might be alive,” said the people who brought back Emperor Palpatine just a few years earlier.
There’s a lot hypothesis that, now that Disney has a brand new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, and Lucasfilm has new presidents, Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, perhaps Soderbergh and Driver can be requested to make the film once more. Hey, something is feasible. However we predict this ship has sailed.
